Felt Coasters
Just for a little fun, I thought I'd try making a double layer felt coaster. The concept is pretty simple, but in practice a few things can go wrong. Felt stretches quite easily, and can go askew while being stitched or ironed. This makes it tricky to get the edges evenly lined up, and some final trimming may be needed. In this case it's a good idea to cut the pieces slightly larger than what the finished coaster would be.
YOU WILL NEED:
two felt colours (one bright and one neutral for more 'pop')
white heavy weight thread
double-sided fusible interfacing
sewing machine and iron
Full instructions after the jump
1) Cut evenly measured squares from each fabric colour (roughly 4x4")
2) On the top piece, cut out desired flower petal shapes by pinching the felt
3) Stitch flower 'stems' onto the top piece
4) Cut square from interfacing to match felt squares. Place beneath top piece and trace where the cutouts have been made. Cut out the same shapes.
5) Iron interfacing (glue side down) to the bottom square and let cool as per interfacing instructions
6) Peel backing from interfacing and immediately place top piece over the bottom piece, stitched side up, and iron as per interfacing instructions
7) Let cool before trimming edges and rounding corners
And there you have it!
